Course Description:

This continuing education workshop provides an in-depth examination of ethical risks associated with tele-mental health and the growing integration of AI chatbots in clinical contexts. As digital care becomes standard practice, clinicians must navigate challenges that extend beyond traditional ethical frameworks, including data security vulnerabilities, limitations in clinical assessment, cross-jurisdictional legal concerns, and the complexities of human–AI interaction.

Participants will explore a comprehensive taxonomy of 100 ethics risks spanning privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, clinical effectiveness, equity and access, professional boundaries, crisis response, technological reliability, and AI-specific concerns such as bias, hallucinations, and accountability gaps. Through applied discussion and case-based analysis, the course emphasizes practical strategies for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating these risks in everyday practice.

This workshop is designed for mental health professionals seeking to strengthen ethical competence, reduce liability, and deliver responsible, high-quality care in digitally mediated environments.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and categorize key ethical risks associated with tele-mental health and AI chatbot use across clinical, technical, legal, and relational domains.
  2. Evaluate real-world scenarios to determine ethical vulnerabilities and apply appropriate risk mitigation strategies consistent with professional standards.
  3. Implement practical safeguards—including informed consent enhancements, privacy protections, and crisis management protocols—to improve ethical decision-making in digital mental health practice.
